Pandora Internet Radio Pt. 2

Pandora Internet Radio Pt. 2

Pandora is one of today’s most popular radio stations available on the web! What is so special about Pandora is that you get to choose what kind of songs you want to listen to—you essentially create your own radio station! Today, we'll discuss about how to manage your profile, genre stations and more!

Once you get on the website, sign in with your username and password. If you are ever on a different screen other than the main one displaying your radio stations, simply click on the first tab on the upper left-hand corner of the page that says “Your Profile.” This will bring you back to your homepage. If you click on the side arrow of the tab on the toolbar that reads “Your Stations,” you can sort your stations either by the date they were added or by name. And you can also select to show only certain genres of stations or all of them in your list.

The second main tab on the top of the homepage is labeled “About the Music.” Under this tab, you can select to find a song, find an artist, Pandora Blog, Pandora Video Series, or learn more about the Music Genome Project. Some of these features, however, only work if you download Pandora One. There is a 24-hour free trial available to download online if you wish to use this more advanced program!

On the bottom of the homepage, or Your Profile, there are four options listed in enlarged letters. The first reads Genre Stations. If you click on listen now, it lets you select a genre category, be it alternative, blues, children’s, country, dance, hip hop, reggae, rock, or anything else! You can click on the “x” in the upper right hand corner of the box if you wish to return to your homepage.

The second option is labeled Video Series. If you click on watch now, it opens a new window that shows great videos about music, how music is made, and where you can hear it! You can even enter your email address on your page if you wish to receive updates. This is a newer feature that has been added to Pandora.

The third option is Pandora Mobile. If you click on find your phone, it opens a new window listing a selection of some of the most popular cell phones out there today. If yours is one of the ones listed, you can click on “Learn more” and listen to Pandora on your mobile phone anywhere you please, whether it be at the gym, in the car, during work breaks—wherever!

The fourth option is Friend’s Music. If you click on check it out, you can discover what music your friends are listening to and currently enjoying. Pandora allows you to connect via Facebook or find your friends by entering in their email address. You and your friends can swap great music stations and more! Enjoy!

What hot swappable means?

What "hot swappable" means?

In this day and age, it's very important for computers and other electronic devices to be as user friendly as possible and with that, more and more devices are being made with hot swappable capabilities. Basically, a hot swappable device is one that can be added or removed from a computer without having to reboot. USB devices are probably the most well known for being hot swappable, but there are several others as well.

Let's take a USB flash drive as an example. Most flash drives already have all the software they need built right in to them, so when you plug a flash drive into one of your USB ports, your computer is able to automatically recognize it as new hardware. In addition, you're able to start working with the flash drive right away, without having to download any software or drivers. All in all, if a device is able to begin functioning immediately after you plug it into your computer, it is considered to be hot swappable.

Like I said earlier, there are several hot swappable items on the market today. There are flash drives, printers, digital cameras, scanners, Webcams, microphones and many, many more. The hot swappable functionality is beneficial in that it allows you to work much faster without interruptions and with ease. I mean, if you had to restart your computer every time you wanted to use a new device, you'd be wasting a lot of time and you'd probably become very frustrated. I know I would!

You can also use most hot swappable devices on other computers. For instance, if you have more than one computer in your home, you can use your flash drive on both PCs without any trouble. All hot swappable devices work exactly the same in that no matter which computer you use, they will always work for you automatically. And if you really think about it, that saves you some money as well, because you don't have to go out and buy new hardware for every computer you use. Many businesses use hot swappable items as well.

So, if you're looking to buy a new flash drive or printer, etc., check it to make sure it is hot swappable. If you buy all of your hardware that way, you will save yourself a lot of time, money and frustration. And that just makes it all worthwhile, doesn't it?!

Windows 7 Burns ISO Images

Windows 7 Burns ISO Images!

Hey, do you know what an ISO image is? Basically, it's a ready-to-go file that can be burned to a CD or DVD.  What I'm talking about here, however, is Windows 7's ability to burn ISO images without any extra software required!

If you have an ISO image on your computer and you'd like to burn it to a CD or DVD simply locate the ISO file, right-click it and select Burn Disc Image

A window should pop up called Windows Disc Image Burner. Simply insert a blank CD or DVD into your CD or DVD burner and click Burn. In a few minutes you should have a disc that will act just like the parent disc it was originally burned from!

If you're wondering how to create an ISO from a CD or DVD, you'll need a program like Img Burn or Nero  to do so.  Remember, not all discs can be turned into an image; some are copy protected.

Improve Windows Experience Index in Windows 7

Improve Windows Experience Index in Windows 7

The Windows Experience Index has been around since Windows Vista came out and, naturally, most computer users are looking for methods to obtain as high a WEI score as possible. Further, ever since Windows 7 came out, there have been some changes in the WEI. Most users’ WEI scores changed from Windows Vista to Windows 7, which has led many users to question the veracity of the WEI calculation.

Below is information on what the WEI is, how it is calculated, why there is a difference between your WEI in Vista and Windows 7 and how to go about improving your WEI.

The Windows Experience Index is a number which indicates the relative performance capabilities of the hardware which is currently present in your computer. The number, known as a “base score”, is a composite figure constituting the overall performance of the computer across various categories, namely: Processor, Memory (RAM), Graphics, Gaming Graphics and Primary Hard Disk. The base score indicated is the lowest of the individual scores and indicates the hardware component which is acting as a bottleneck and limiting the computers performance.

How to Calculate your Windows Experience Index (WEI)?

The Windows Experience Index can be calculated by navigating to Start>Control Panel>System Properties and clicking on “Windows Experience Index”. A new window will open up which will have a button saying “Rate this computer” if it is the first time you are calculating WEI or “Re-Run Assessment” if you want to re-calculate WEI.

Difference between WEI in Windows Vista and Windows 7

The WEI is calculated by a module known as Windows System Assessment Tool (WinSAT). The scale used for WEI by WinSAT is different in these two operating systems and hence a direct comparison is akin to comparing apples and oranges. WEI in Windows Vista was calculated between 1.0 and 5.9 while WEI in Windows 7 is calculated between 1.0 and 7.9. Hence a direct comparison of these figures is best avoided.

How is Windows Experience Index (WEI) important? Why is it important to increase your Windows Experience Index (WEI)?

The WEI is important because it can be used to measure whether a computer’s hardware is suitable to run specific software. For example, the Windows Aero Glass experience is recommended to be used on computers with a WEI of 3 or more. Specifically it can be used to determine whether a computer’s hardware performance matches the requirements of software if software vendors provide a minimum acceptable WEI score to run their software satisfactorily.

Steps to Improve Windows Experience Index (WEI) in Windows 7

While drastic changes to your WEI can be obtained only through hardware modifications, the following steps can be followed to improve WEI in Windows 7.

Hard Disk Related WEI Issues: Navigate to Start>Control Panel>Device Manager. Expand DiskDrives and open the Properties for your Primary Hard Disk. Click on the “Policies” tab. Un-check “Enable Write Caching on the device” and then re-run the assessment for WEI. Usually this will lead to an improvement in HD score. If this is the limiting factor for the base score, then the base score will improve. After doing this, open device manager again and re-check “Enable Write Caching on the device” for the primary hard disk.

Graphics Related WEI Issues: Graphics related WEI scores are evaluated based on the Direct X 9 and Direct X 10 performance. Updating your computers graphics card to the latest drivers may result in improved graphics performance. Alternatively, if the graphics scores are poor and if the computer uses an onboard graphics card, then the best solution may be to go in for a suitable GPU (video card) as per your requirements.

Processor Related WEI Issues: Although there is not much which can be done to improve your processors score without significant investment in terms of changing your processor, small improvements in the score are possible through over-clocking. However this is very complicated and recommended for advanced users only. If over-clocking is performed incorrectly, then you may permanently damage your computer and render it unusable.

Memory (RAM) Related WEI Issues: If RAM is your limiting factor with respect to WEI, then it could be addressed by adding additional RAM modules.

Note: Remember to recalculate WEI after any hardware modifications.

Manually Editing the Rating:

This method is not recommended, except for advanced users and may not work with all operating systems.
The purpose of editing the rating manually is to enable certain features which would otherwise be unavailable.

1.Enter the following text in Start Menu>Searchbox (or) Run (or) Explorer Address Bar:

i.%windir%\Performance\WinSAT\DataStore
2.There should be one or more .xml files within the folder. Sort them by the “Date Created” or look at their name. The file name will be in following format:

i.2009-12-08 21.23.18.858 Assessment (Initial).WinSAT.xml

ii."2009-12-08 21.23.18.858" is an indicative figure and may be different on your computer.

3.Open the most recent file in "Wordpad" and navigate to the line having < WinSPR>. It will most probably be the 12th line and will look like the following:

< WinSPR>'
< SystemScore>1"
< MemoryScore>4"
< CpuScore>3.4"
< CPUSubAggScore>2.9CPUSubAggScore>"
< VideoEncodeScore>3.9VideoEncodeScore>"
< GraphicsScore>1GraphicsScore>"
< GamingScore>1"
< DiskScore>4.2"
(all without the space after first < )

4.These numbers can be edited and changed to a higher number as required

< WinSPR>
< SystemScore>7.9
< MemoryScore>7.9
< CpuScore>7.9
< CPUSubAggScore>7.9CPUSubAggScore>
< VideoEncodeScore>7.9VideoEncodeScore>
< GraphicsScore>7.9GraphicsScore>
< GamingScore>7.9
< DiskScore>7.9
(all without the space after first < )

5.Save this file, restart the computer and check the Windows Experience Index in System Properties. It will be 7.9 now.

Gmail Notifier

Gmail Notifier

If you are on a website and click on an email address does Gmail open for you? Would you like for it to? If so then help has arrived. Today I am going to show you how to set Gmail as your default email. After you do the following steps when you click on an email link using any browser a Gmail compose window will open automatically.

You will need to download Gmail Notifier here. This is an application that will alert you when you have new Gmail messages. You will have an icon in your system tray that will let you know when you have unread Gmail messages. It also shows who the sender is, the subject and snippets of the message without having to open a web browser.

When Gmail Notifier finishes downloading click on the installation file and choose Run. Accept the license agreement by clicking on I Agree.

During the installation, be sure to select the option Use for outgoing mail. This allows Gmail to send mail from links on the web, which means when you are on a website and click on a link to email someone a Gmail compose window will come up. Click Next.

Choose the install location and click Next. There will already be a path in the Destination Folder field. You can choose this or if you want to install it to another location click Browse and choose the location. Click Next.

Choose the Start Menu folder. It will be set to Gmail Notifier as default, but if you would like to change this choose another option. Click Install.

The program will now install. After the installation is finished click the close button.

There will be an icon for Gmail Notifier in your system tray. Right click on this icon and choose Options. Check to make sure the Use Gmail for internet mailto:links is checked, and under Web browser it should be set to system default. Click OK.

When you have new mail the Notifier will show you a portion of the message. If you want to open your Gmail just double-click on the Notifier icon in the system tray. It may ask you for your username and password to your Gmail account the first time you use it.

If you only use Firefox do these steps to set Gmail as your default email.
Go to Tools and select Options

Click on the Applications tab and type “Mail” in the search field. Under Action choose Use Gmail and Click OK.
