Import mail and contacts to Gmail

Import mail and contacts to Gmail

If you use Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL or any other free email provider, you’ve probably considered switching to Gmail for its superior spam filter or its integration with other Google services, like Google Docs.

Even if you have your own domain or company email address, you should consider using an extra Gmail account. Free email providers, like Gmail, are indispensable when you sign up on different sites and make your email address public. They protect your private email address from needless spam.

Furthermore, if one account were to succumb to the endless onslaught of spam, you can always create a new email account or switch to another email provider.

To help you make the transition as smooth as possible, Gmail offers a quick and easy way to import all previous mail and contacts from any email provider. Of course, you can also transfer and redirect emails from other Gmail accounts.

Gmail’s import option is compatible with any email provider using POP3. This means that any emails and contacts from Yahoo, Hotmail or AOL can be safely transferred to your new Gmail account.

Here’s how to import emails and contacts from any email provider to Gmail.

First, login to your Gmail account.

Then, click on the Settings button located on the top right corner of the window, next to the Sign outbutton.

In the Settings window, click on the Accounts and Import tab.

Under the Import mail and contacts section, click on the Import mail and contacts button.

Type in your old email address (ex: name@yahoo.com) and click the Continue button.

Now, input the password you chose for your old email address and click on Continue.

In the next step, Gmail allows you to choose what to import to your new email address.

All the option boxes are checked by default. However, if you only want to import your contacts, uncheck the Import mail box.

If you don’t want to redirect new emails from your old address to Gmail, uncheck the Import new mail for next 30 days box. Moreover, if you’re switching to Gmail because your email address is blocked with spam, it might be a good idea not to redirect any new emails since you’ll also redirect the spam.

In addition, you may want to label redirected emails with your old email address or give them a more suggestive name.

After configuring your import options, click on Start import.

Finally, click the OK button to finish the import process.

The import process will take place in the background, so you can use your Gmail account normally, and it will continue, even if you log out of Gmail and close your browser.

If you don’t see any imported email or contacts right away, be patient, as the process may take up to 2 days to complete.

You can always check the status of your import by clicking on Settings and then on the Accounts andImport tab.

If, for some reason, you want to stop the import process, follow the above instructions to reach Import mail and contacts, click the stop button on the right and confirm by clicking OK.

Gmail Notifier

Gmail Notifier

If you are on a website and click on an email address does Gmail open for you? Would you like for it to? If so then help has arrived. Today I am going to show you how to set Gmail as your default email. After you do the following steps when you click on an email link using any browser a Gmail compose window will open automatically.

You will need to download Gmail Notifier here. This is an application that will alert you when you have new Gmail messages. You will have an icon in your system tray that will let you know when you have unread Gmail messages. It also shows who the sender is, the subject and snippets of the message without having to open a web browser.

When Gmail Notifier finishes downloading click on the installation file and choose Run. Accept the license agreement by clicking on I Agree.

During the installation, be sure to select the option Use for outgoing mail. This allows Gmail to send mail from links on the web, which means when you are on a website and click on a link to email someone a Gmail compose window will come up. Click Next.

Choose the install location and click Next. There will already be a path in the Destination Folder field. You can choose this or if you want to install it to another location click Browse and choose the location. Click Next.

Choose the Start Menu folder. It will be set to Gmail Notifier as default, but if you would like to change this choose another option. Click Install.

The program will now install. After the installation is finished click the close button.

There will be an icon for Gmail Notifier in your system tray. Right click on this icon and choose Options. Check to make sure the Use Gmail for internet mailto:links is checked, and under Web browser it should be set to system default. Click OK.

When you have new mail the Notifier will show you a portion of the message. If you want to open your Gmail just double-click on the Notifier icon in the system tray. It may ask you for your username and password to your Gmail account the first time you use it.

If you only use Firefox do these steps to set Gmail as your default email.
Go to Tools and select Options

Click on the Applications tab and type “Mail” in the search field. Under Action choose Use Gmail and Click OK.

Six of the most used Gmail Labs features

Six of the most used Gmail Labs features
Six of the most used Gmail Labs features have been official by Gmail. Adopted by millions of users, google took the decision based on their usage and user feedback. Perviously, some of the other experimental features like tasks, google calender and offline gmail, were made a part ofgmail.

Search Autocomplete

Type the keywords in the Gmail search box and search auto-complete will automatically suggest the terms that you might be looking for. A very handy feature that can make search within gmail very quick.

Go to Label

Go to label has been integrated with the gmail search box and works for those who have keyboard shortcuts turned on. It adds keyboards shortcuts to navigate in your account, like- typing “g” for “go to” and “l” to get “label”. Thses simple shortcuts will take you to search box with the “label:” operator already filled for you. Start typing the label name and search autocomplete will help you find that label. Send your cursor to the blank search field, using the keyboard shortcut “/” .

Forgotten Attachment Detector

Often we forget to attach desired files to emails and send them with forgotten attachment. Forgotten attachment alerts you when you send such an email. The alert is issued after a quick scan of the contents of your email, searching for keywords that suggest the presence of attachment with the email.

Youtube Previews

We often receive links to youtube videos in my mails, for which i have to copy the link and paste in my address bar to see the video. Youtube previews allows you to view such videos within your email, reducing the load to a single page.

Custom Label Colors

Coloured labels make life easy with gmail when you receive so many emails from different people. You can easily arrange the mails in labels. And when your world is colourful enough, you would love to add these colours to your labels too! You can choose from over 4000 possible color combinations to help distinguish and organize your labels. Add custom color from the regular labels interface. And there you have it!

Vacation Dates

If you are using vacation responder, you must be knowing that when turned on, it automatically sends a reply to people who mailed you when you were on a holiday. And with Vacation Dates, you can specify the dates in advance, for which you will be away! You need not to turn on the vacation responder once you have submitted the dates.

Consolidate Multiple Gmail Accounts

Consolidate Multiple Gmail Accounts

It’s quite a hassle to manage multiple email accounts on a regular basis because you have to remember all the usernames, passwords and logins to check for new messages. But what if you could tweak your Gmail inbox and get all the emails at one place?

This article describes the step-by-step procedure to manage multiple email inboxes from a single email account.

Before we move on, let’s assume that you have the following three email accounts:
  • John@gmail.com
  • John-office@gmail.com
  • John-business@gmail.com
You want to manage all the three email accounts from the inbox of john@gmail.com, which is your primary email account. Just follow the steps mentioned below:

1.Login to your secondary email account from where you would want to forward emails to your primary email account. In this case, the secondary email accounts are john-office@gmail.com and john-business@gmail.com.

2.Once you are logged in, click the Settings link which is placed at the top right of the page.

3.In the settings page, click the “Forwarding and Pop/IMAP” tab and enter the email address of your primary email account in the forwarding text box and click "Save Changes".
This would forward all the emails received at the current email address to john@gmail.com, which is your primary email account.

4.In the same way, login to other secondary email accounts and implement the above setting.

5.Now, login to the primary Gmail account where you would want to receive emails from all your other email accounts. Click the small “Labs” icon at the right top of the browser window.

Note: - If you don't see the Labs Button then just type www.labs.google.co.in in your browser

6.This will open the Gmail Labs page. In this page, scroll to the bottom and find ”Multiple Inboxes”.

Select the radio button “Enable” and click “Save changes” at the bottom of the page.

7.This will reload your inbox. Click the “Settings” link again placed at the right top of the browser window.

8.Now click the “Multiple inboxes” link as shown below

9.In “pane-0” enter the email address of your first secondary email account (john-office@gmail.com) and in “Pane-1” enter the email address of your next secondary email account (john-business@gmail.com).

Note: - If you are combining only one secondary email id then delete the contents in "Pane-1" (if any). Generally entry for "draft" or "starred" folder is there in "Pane-1".

Leave all other settings as it is and click “Save Changes” when you are done.

10.Now reload your email inbox and you will see two panes in the right side of inbox.

These panes are “containers” of your secondary email accounts. Whenever you receive a new email message at any of the secondary email accounts a copy will be forwarded to your primary email account (e.g john@gmail.com)

The copy of that email message will be listed in the respective panes which you created.

That's it! Now you can check email messages of all your email accounts at one place without having to login and out from each and every account. This setting save a lot of time and should be practiced if you get a lot of emails across multiple email addresses every day.

GMail Manager

Gmail Manager

Gmail has now a days become the first choice email for many and very often we have more than 2 or 3 Gmail accounts. For instance you might have separate Gmail accounts for your blog, personal mail and work related email. As you might know that we at rtCamp use Google apps and I have a personal Gmail account. So monitoring multiple account makes sense for me.

Gmail Manager 0.6 which is a Firefox add-on. In the case you have some concerns having Greasemonkey scripts running on your browser from a security angle; Gmail manager makes a lot of sense.

About Gmail Manager

* Gmail Manager add-on can be downloaded by clicking here. Once the add-on is downloaded restart Firefox browser.
* The add-on options allows your enter your Gmail ID and Password. This will give you notification for any acocunt when you get an email.
* Just clicking on the relevant account will take you directly to your Inbox.
* If you hover your mouse pointer over the Account tag; you will get a pop-up which shows your emails that are in your inbox. Unfortunately you cannot go directly to the email from the pop-up. I guess that is what can be considered room for improvement.

If you are using Firefox browser and have a lot of active Gmail accounts Gmail Manager add-on is something which should interest you.
